 60 litre sack of high quality, bark free softwood wood chips. Please note that as these are a natural product and produced outdoors, they may be wet when you open them but will soon dry out.
 
These woodchips make an ideal base for your chickens outdoor run and are what we use here in all our runs.  They help prevent the run becoming muddy and give your chickens entertainment by giving them a surface to scratch in.
 
Over the last 15 years we have trialled multiple types of bases for our chicken runs and these are what we find has worked best.  Contrary to popular belief it isn't necessary to have hardwood, in fact we find softwood far better.  Softwood chips tend to be much larger so don't compress down as quickly, and resin filled softwood is less likely to suffer from fungal infections.  These large softwood chips will take years to rot away and will probably outlive your hens! 
 
For a long lasting surface lay the woodchips on top of our turf protector or rubber mud mats.  The turf protector/mats will stop your chickens scratching up the mud below and prevent the woodchips sinking into the ground underneath.
 
Depending on the size of your run and quantity of chickens the woodchips may need changing anything from a few months to annually.  Between changing the woodchips they can be kept hygienic and odour free by sprinkling with Agrisec 250  powdered disinfectant.

A 60 litre sack will cover approximately 1 square metre. These are large chips of wood which are ideal for outdoor use - small/fine woodchips will simply mulch down.
